Our Story

THE GREEN HOMESTEAD STORY

I grew up in the mid 60’s so I grew up with all the aerosols and fresh scents you could ever want. When I had my own 4 kids I didn’t know there was any other way. So like my mom, I used all the smells, sprays, softeners and air fresheners I could get my hands on.
And by that time there were so many more choices.

When the kids were preteens I started reading and hearing about plastics and how bad they are for the environment. Soon after I learned they are just as bad for humans too!
I got rid of as much plastic as I could.

Next came fragrance. The chemicals in the air, on our clothes, in our cleaning products had to go too. Including our beloved fabric softeners. OH how we all missed that lovely scent that I now knew was so BAD for us.

I started using products that seemed safer and healthier. Not all are exactly as they portray themselves. Later I started learning to make my own and found they work just as well if not better than the others, and I don’t have to worry about what we are breathing.

Now my kids are grown and living on their own, but I still use the products I make myself and learned to make new ones. One day while talking on the phone with my oldest, Kyle, and killing ants at the same time. I was telling him how we have so many ants in every room. I told him how I was using the ant spray that I make. A few days later he called to ask about my spray, “does it work?” “You make it yourself?” Yep it works great and I make it.
Then he said “Mom you like it. It works. Other people like things that are not toxic and better for the environment.
We need to make this and We should start a business.

At first I thought he was crazy, I had to take some time to think about it. I thought if I like these products and feel better about using household products that are healthy for me and the environment maybe others will too. Also the idea of doing a project with my child, made my heart real happy, so I agreed. But not without a lot of fear.
We began the process of getting a business up and running. After agonizing over a name for this project we finally agreed on
The Green Homestead.

Kyle and I are determined to make each product without the stuff that poisons our air and water, using nontoxic, organic, food grade (when possible) ingredients, and keeping the plastics to a minimum. We figure, healthier for our bodies, healthier for the planet.

I hope you like our products just as much as we do.
